Is Onestream broadband a good choice?

Our overall rating: 8 out of 10

Onestream offers more package choices than most of the other newer, smaller providers. There are seven in all, ranging from a couple of fibre options to four full fibre options with speed up to 900Mbps.

A less favourable difference to Onestream, is that it has an extra add-on charge for router hire. This is an unusual practice as most swallow up the costs and include them in their monthly prices. But expect to add anything from £2.95 to £5.95 a month onto your cost. That being said, their overall costs are pretty good value, it's just a bit annoying that this part isn't included upfront.

The positives

  • High speeds
  • Great value for money
  • Good availability

The negatives

  • Extra costs, including router charge and set-up fee
  • No TV options
  • No gift rewards

Speed is often the biggest consideration when choosing a broadband package. If you have multiple people using the internet at one time, then a higher speed and bandwidth will be essential. Equally, if it’s a small household using the internet for everyday usage, paying for business-grade bandwidth will probably end up being a waste.

You should decide what speed is right for you, based on your broadband habits at home. Here’s a handy guide to help show what bandwidth usage your different applications need.

Onestream full fibre review

What exactly is full fibre?

It’s the fastest available internet in the UK.

Around two-thirds of homes in the UK can now access ultrafast broadband via fibre-optic technology called ‘G.fast’ or ‘Fibre To The Premises’ (FTTP).

FTTP, also known as full fibre, is the next generation of broadband. It removes the need to rely on copper phone lines and instead connects fibre cables straight to your home. This means there’s no slowdown on the data between the street cabinet and your property and the speed and strength are much more powerful than any previous fibre broadband technology as a result.  Common internet issues like buffering and outages become almost nonexistent.

This technology will future-proof homes and businesses across the UK because, once it’s installed, properties won’t need to install new cables for their broadband for decades.

Does Onestream broadband have reliable connection?

Onestream uses the well-established and reliable Openreach network for all its packages. Openreach is the physical network (the wires under the street and the boxes on the street) and the biggest telecommunications network in the UK.

Because it’s with Openreach it means you have a 96% chance of being in reach of at least a partial fibre connection.

Our Onestream broadband rating for connectivity: 9

How much does Onestream broadband cost?

Starting from just £19 a month for partial fibre speeds and going up to £33.95 for its fastest 900Mbps package, Onestream does offer good value.

There are extra costs to consider too. There’s a one-off cost of £4.95 which we presume is an activation fee. And there’s also a router hire fee that will cost you from £2.95-£4.95. You can avoid this by using your own router if you choose.

How long are Onestream contracts?

Onestream’s packages come as a standard 12 or 24 month contract. You’ll pay slightly less for the 24 month option.

Does Onestream have any bundle options?

Onestream doesn’t have TV or mobile packages you can bundle with its broadband, it just focuses on fibre broadband.

There is an option to add a phone line as an add-on service. This phone line is not a traditional landline, instead it is delivered via your broadband line in the form of VoIP (voice over IP).

This currently costs a one-off fee of £14.95 if you want to port your current home phone number. And then there are four different options of phone package add-ons that range from £6.50 - £12.50.

Onestream rewards

This broadband provider doesn’t currently offer any reward incentives with its deals.

Does Onestream put up its broadband prices every year?

Yes, unfortunately like many other providers, Onestream may increase its prices mid-contract.

You should factor the above in when signing up as you’ll probably need to agree to an annual price rise as part of the terms and conditions.

Our Onestream broadband rating for cost: 8

How easy is it to get Onestream set up?

If you’re already on another Openreach provider, switching to Onestream should be fairly easy. It’s likely that you will be too, as most providers - Sky, BT, TalkTalk, NOW, Plusnet, EE - operate through this network, the main exception being Virgin Media. If this is the case, you might have an extra task of getting an Openreach line installed, or if there is one, making this active.

Typically, it takes approximately 16 days for a new order with Onestream to go live. They try and provide you with a go-live date within 72 hours of placing your order.

Onestream Wi-Fi routers

As already mentioned, Wi-Fi routers are not included in your monthly pricing. Onestream actually encourage you to use whatever existing router you have if this is compatible.

There are three different router choices. Which one you add will depend on whatever speed your package requires.

Standard Router - £2.95 Per month Superstream Router - £4.95 Per month Superstream+ Router - £5.95 Per month
