Is YouFibre broadband a good choice?

Our overall rating: 45/50

If you’re wondering how a newcomer can suddenly spring up and with it bring speeds seven times faster than established giants like BT – it’s all to do with delivery. Netomnia is a company that builds full fibre infrastructure with advanced technology to ensure the broadband it delivers is the fastest available. And YouFibre uses Netnomia’s cabling to deliver its broadband.

Their technology allows for symmetrical speeds up to 10Gbps, meaning download and upload speeds are the same. If you look at the speeds of any broadband providers who use Openreach – BT, Sky, Plusnet, NOW – you’ll only see a maximum of 1Gbps and the upload speeds will always be significantly lower. This is because Openreach’s infrastructure is older.

YouFibre is not only significantly speedier than the bigger players, but it’s also cheaper, more flexible (there’s a monthly rolling contract option) and has better customer service reviews. There’s a lot to love, but you’ve got to be in reach of its network. It’s only available to 90 locations in what looks like a sporadic scattering of patches over the UK, starting south from Dover and getting as far north as Dunfermline. So, before you get any more excited about the prospect of this provider, your first port of call is to check with its postcode finder to see if you’ve got access to its full fibre networks.

The positives

  • The fastest speeds in the UK
  • Good value, with no mid-contract price rises
  • Great customer service reviews

The negatives

  • Limited availability
  • No bundle options

In our full review we take a look at the pros and cons of each area in more detail: speed, full fibre review, cost, setup and customer service.

How fast is YouFibre broadband?

The fastest in the UK! As discussed already, it uses newer full fibre technology to deliver lightning-fast speeds. Smaller, independent networks like YouFibre are transforming our digital landscape with their fibre optic networks.

Full fibre gives you the fastest broadband speed possible. It relies entirely on fibre optic cables that run from the broadband exchange to your property, which is also why they can be known as ‘fibre to the premises’ (FTTP). There’s no need for anything in between. Using this technique it is possible to get speeds up to 10Gbps. Issues like buffering and outages will become a thing of the past.

But remember, where you live will also play a big factor. We’ll list everything below, but you’ll also need to check your postcode to see what is currently available.

Speed is often the biggest consideration when choosing a broadband package. If you have multiple people using the internet at one time, then a higher speed and bandwidth will be essential. Equally, if it’s a small household using the internet for everyday usage, paying for business-grade bandwidth will probably end up being a waste.

You should decide what speed is right for you, based on your broadband habits at home. Here’s a handy guide to help show what bandwidth usage your different applications need.

YouFibre broadband speeds

There are five full fibre options, all have symmetrical upload and download speeds.

You 150

A great plan that powers a download speed and upload speed of 150Mbps. It’s well equipped to handle large content uploads, streaming and online gaming.

You 500

A very fast connection that is great for large households, multiple devices and downloading and streaming movies and videogames in UHD (ultra high definition). This has an average download and upload speed of 500Mbps.

You 1000

This full-fibre package offers users an impressive average download and upload speed of 900Mbps which will easily cover all high-use working and gaming internet usage in large, busy households.

You 2000

2GB speeds (well, 1800Mbps as an average to be precise), woah there! This is 28 times faster than the national average broadband. Do you actually need this much bandwidth? Probably not. But when you can get it for under £50 and ensure your internet will always be living its best life, no matter what you’re throwing at it, then why not…

You 8000

This incredible 7000Mbps package – not 8000 as the name would imply – is the fastest on offer in the UK. No household really needs this. And the devices they connect to won’t be able to offer these actual speeds either. Would we recommend this still? Probably not as it’s £99 a month for something you really won’t be able to utilise properly.

Our YouFibre broadband rating for speed: 10

Does YouFibre broadband have reliable connection?

YouFibre uses the full fibre network services of Netomnia to deliver its broadband. In general there seems to be a positive general consensus that it offers reliable and fast internet connection, although at times some users have reported occasional outages, especially in areas with ongoing network construction.

It isn’t currently signed up to Ofcom’s voluntary code practice on better broadband speeds, but customer scores are above average on its Trustpilot rating for connectivity.

Our YouFibre broadband rating for connectivity: 8

How much does YouFibre broadband cost?

Starting from £23 a month for full fibre speeds, it’s difficult to find a cheaper offer. Plus, YouFibre has no one-off upfront set-up costs or hidden fees. It also has a price lock that promises never to unexpectedly increase your price mid-contract, so your deal will stay the same for the whole time.

How long are YouFibre broadband contracts?

YouFibre contracts are 18 months and there’s also an option of one-month rolling. You’ll pay more for this flexible no-contract option, but even at this price it is still good value for the speeds you get.

Does YouFibre have any bundle options?

YouFibre is a broadband-only supplier and there are no TV or mobile add on options.

Does YouFibre have any phone packages?

There is no landline required for a YouFibre connection, instead customers can choose to pay for a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service, whereby audio calls are connected over your internet connection.

At the time of writing, YouPhone costs £5 per month for unlimited weekend and evening calls to landlines. You can choose to keep your existing phone number if you wish.

YouFibre rewards

YouFibre has a refer a friend incentive. Share your unique link with friends and family and if they sign up you’ll get £100 each.

Does YouFibre put up its broadband prices every year?

No, it doesn’t. It has a ‘no in-contract price rise’ promise that you’ll benefit from a fixed price for the full duration of your contract.

How easy is it to get YouFibre broadband set up?

Once your order is placed, YouFibre aims to connect your broadband service within two weeks. It normally manages in one week. Because it uses its own full fibre network, unless your home has had a Netomnia provider before, you’ll need an engineer visit.

Standard installation and activation is free. However, some properties may need additional infrastructure put into place and this could mean an engineer charge. But you should be told all of this before any of the work starts.

YouFibre Wi-Fi routers

With every YouFibre broadband package you'll get a free router.

You’ll get the much-applauded eero 6 Pro router on packages 900Mbps and under. It’s a triaband hub and can easily manage over 75 devices at one.

For the 2Gbps and 7Gbps you’ll get an incredible router worth £500. It’s the only one on the UK market capable of coping with these mind-boggling speeds.

Complete Wi-Fi

For an extra £8 a month, customers can add YouMesh to their package. This add-on uses mesh extenders to make sure you get seamless coverage all around your home with guaranteed minimum speeds, too.

Our YouFibre broadband rating for setup, installation & equipment: 9
