Is V4 Consumer broadband a good choice?

Our overall rating: 40 out of 50

V4 Consumer offers more choices of plans than most of the other newer, smaller providers around. There are eight in all, ranging from a couple of fibre options to six full fibre options with speed up to 900Mbps. It also runs on the biggest broadband network, Openreach, so it’s available across the entire UK.

On the downside, it’s not the cheapest. When you look at its speed comparison for price with other providers, V4 tends to be on the more expensive side. Although, it’s worth noting that it doesn’t put it prices up mid-contract, so what you pay at the start will be honoured until the end.

The positives

  • High speeds
  • No mid-contract price rises
  • Good availability

The negatives

  • Expensive
  • No TV options
  • 2-year contracts

How fast is V4 Consumer broadband?

Speed is often the biggest consideration when choosing a broadband package. If you have multiple people using the internet at one time, then a higher speed and bandwidth will be essential. Equally, if it’s a small household using the internet for everyday usage, paying for business-grade bandwidth will probably end up being a waste.

You should decide what speed is right for you, based on your broadband habits at home. Here’s a handy guide to help show what bandwidth usage your different applications need.

In slow to fast order

FTTC Prime 40

There are two options for households not yet with access to full fibre, this is the slowest. It has an average download speed of 31Mbps which is okay, but the next plan up is only £1 more and gives double of this. We’d suggest picking this one (FTTC Prime 80) instead.

FTTC Prime 80

The best option for those who haven’t got access to full fibre speeds yet. This plan gives your home average download speeds of 68.4Mbps which will keep most households happy with their internet needs.

Full Fibre 40

With average download speeds of 31Mbps, this package is low on ability considering it is full fibre. Even though it should be okay for browsing and streaming in smaller households, we’d recommend picking a better plan as the minimal extra cost will be worth it.

Full Fibre 80

This plan has average download speeds of 62Mbps with no download limits. A decent plan for anyone browsing and streaming in households with 5-10 simultaneous devices.

Full Fibre 115

With 100Mbps average download speed, this plan is great for most family homes and can easily cope with several devices being used at one time.

Full Fibre - 160

This package has an average download speed of 136.8Mbps at peak times. Ideal for those uploading large content, streaming and online gaming.

Full Fibre - 220

A speedy full fibre package offering an average download speed of 181Mbps. This plan handles 15+ devices simultaneously on the go without any difficulties.

Full Fibre - 330

An impressive plan that powers an average download speed of 282Mbps. This choice manages the demands of even the heaviest data users. Gamers will be kept happy with its 43Mbps upload speed.

Full Fibre - 550

V4 Consumer’s second fastest plan. It has an average download speed of about 350 Mbps which gives incredibly fast connection that is great for large households, multiple devices and downloading and streaming movies and videogames in UHD (ultra high definition).

Full Fibre - 1000

V4 Consumer's premium package. Ultrafast full fibre that gives users an impressive average download speed of 950Mbps which will easily cover all high-use working and gaming internet usage in large, busy households.

V4 Consumer full fibre review

What exactly is full fibre?

It’s the fastest available internet in the UK.

Around two-thirds of homes in the UK can now access ultrafast broadband via fibre-optic technology called ‘G.fast’ or ‘Fibre To The Premises’ (FTTP).

FTTP, also known as full fibre, is the next generation of broadband. It removes the need to rely on copper phone lines and instead connects fibre cables straight to your home. This means there’s no slowdown on the data between the street cabinet and your property and the speed and strength are much more powerful than any previous fibre broadband technology as a result.  Common internet issues like buffering and outages become almost nonexistent.

This technology will future-proof homes and businesses across the UK because, once it’s installed, properties won’t need to install new cables for their broadband for decades.

Does V4 broadband have reliable connection?

V4 Consumer uses the well-established and reliable Openreach network for all its packages. Openreach is the physical network (the wires under the street and the boxes on the street) and the biggest telecommunications network in the UK.

Because it’s with Openreach it means you have a 96% chance of being in reach of at least a partial fibre connection.

How much does V4 Consumer broadband cost?

Starting from £27.99 a month for partial fibre speeds and going up to £44.99 for its fastest 1000Mbps package, V4 Consumer isn’t the cheapest broadband option.

On the plus side, there are no unexpected extra activation or router charges. Plus, they pledge not to suddenly put their prices up mid-contract so you’ll pay the same amount throughout.

How long are V4 Consumer contracts?

Bad news for anyone looking for something short term – V4 Consumer only have one 24-month contract option for all of its plans.

Does V4 Consumer have any bundle options?

V4 Consumer doesn’t have TV or mobile packages you can bundle with its broadband, it just focuses on fibre broadband.

You can choose to add a landline to your plan. It comes in the form of a Digital Cloud Line and this new home phone service replaces the need for a landline as it’s powered by broadband connection and plugs into the back of your router. You can port your previous telephone number to this, too.

This digital line costs £12.99 a month and includes calls to other UK landlines and mobiles.

V4 Consumer rewards

This broadband provider doesn’t currently offer any reward incentives with its deals.

Does V4 Consumer put up its broadband prices every year?

No, thankfully prices remain the same and you won’t face any sudden price hikes mid-contract.

How easy is it to get V4 Consumer set up?

If you already have full fibre broadband with another Openreach provider (BT, Sky, NOW, TalkTalk, Plusnet and Vodafone) switching to V4 Consumer is easy. You won’t need any type of installation and V4 Consumer will just send you a router that you can plug in on your go-live date.

If you don’t already have broadband set up, or are with another provider like Virgin Media, you might need an engineer to install a broadband line between your property and the street cabinet or pole nearby. V4 Consumer should cover the cost for this in most circumstances.

Typically, it takes approximately 16 days for a new order to go live. V4 Consumer try and provide a go-live date within 72 hours of placing your order.

V4 Consumer Wi-Fi routers

There are two different router options. Which one you add will depend on whatever speed your package requires.

Customers selecting packages with speeds of 160Mbps or under will be sent the VMG8623 router. A perfectly respectable router that should be fine for these speeds. Anyone choosing from the top four speeds – that’s 220Mbps upwards – you will be supplied with the next model up, the Zyxel DX-3301, which is a more advanced, Wi-Fi 6 ready hub better equipped for faster broadband.
