Sky becomes UK’s fastest major broadband provider
Sky Broadband is now the fastest of the big broadband providers thanks to the launch of its new Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ packages. Although Sky now beats Virgin Media’s highest offering of 2Gbps, it still takes silver when compared to the smaller alternative network, YouFibre, who can offer an incredible 7Gbps to customers.
What does 5 Gbps look like?
5 Gbps = 5,000 megabits per second
That’s 625 megabytes per second download and upload
At this speed, you can...
- Stream 100+ 4K movies at once – without buffering
- Download Call of Duty (~150 GB) in under 4 minutes (it would take you 3 hours 25 minutes on a normal 100Mbps package)
- Have zero-lag cloud gaming, even across multiple devices
- Upload game streams to Twitch/YouTube in real time, in 4K, with no jitter
How have they managed these speeds?
Sky’s new partnership with CityFibre, first announced in 2024, is now officially live. It means it can use CityFibre's new full fibre network which delivers lightening fast symmetrical speeds. Symmetrical means download speeds match the upload speeds. Traditionally upload speeds tend to be much lower.
These packages also include a super advanced router to enable these speeds. Developed in collaboration with Comcast, and the first global WiFi device from Comcast and Sky, the tri-band Gigafast+ hub optimises internet traffic to avoid congestion between connected devices in the home. It includes two 10 Gbps ethernet ports (1 x WAN and 1 x LAN) to support a direct connection for faster speeds for heavy streamers and hefty file downloaders.
Will my home be able to access it?
Maybe not, it all depends on where you live. Sky is delivering the boost via CityFibre cables, which are currently only available in around 4.5 million homes. If you check your postcode here and your address is not on the list, you won't be able to sign up.
How much does it cost?
Prices start at £70 a month for Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ and £80 a month for Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ with the WiFi Max add-on available “at no extra cost” (worth from £4 a month). The latter guarantees WiFi coverage in every room or money back.
