What is ‘no credit check broadband’?

A no credit check broadband plan is a deal you can take out with the provider where you aren’t required to pass a credit check. It’s normally standard for companies to perform this first as they want to ensure the account holder will be able to pay the bill each month.

There are different reasons that could contribute to having a low credit score, including: little or no credit history, frequently missed bill payments, having recently moved from another country and any bankruptcy declarations.

Even if you do have bad credit, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be turned down. These credit checks are often just a formality and providers are usually willing to overlook them and allow those with poorer credit ratings access to their services.

How to get Wi-Fi with no credit checks or bad credit

Choose a broadband provider that doesn’t run credit checks

There are two big names who currently don’t perform credit checks when taking on new customers.

Plusnet

Known for its straightforward, budget-friendly broadband deals and UK-based customer services, Plusnet is a tempting option for anyone looking to switch and save. It also doesn't perform credit checks on anyone opening a plan with them.

NOW Broadband

Choose a 30-day rolling contract

Another way to avoid any type of credit check is to opt for a rolling monthly contract rather than a one or two-year fixed-term payment plan.

These are great if you don’t want to commit too. Although you will end up paying considerably more per month for the pleasure of this flexibility.

Discounted broadband for Universal Credit and other benefits

Also known as ‘essential’ or ‘basic’ broadband, social tarrifs should be offered to anyone claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits. They are delivered in the same way as other packages, but at lower prices.

There are many advantages to these. Firstly they are cheaper, current prices range from about £10 to £23 a month. TalkTalk even offer a six-months free option for certain jobseekers, eligibility is determined by Jobcentre staff for this.

It’s best to contact the providers directly for access to these services.
