Openreach brings faster broadband to Swanage

Openreach has begun work on a major full fibre broadband rollout in Swanage, Dorset – promising residents and businesses access to some of the fastest and most reliable internet speeds in Europe.

The new gigabit-capable network will give thousands of local homes and firms the ability to connect multiple devices at once, stream and game seamlessly, and run businesses more efficiently online.

Once complete, the build is expected to cover the majority of Swanage premises – transforming connectivity across the coastal town.

Openreach says the technology will bring faster, more consistent speeds and fewer faults compared to traditional copper lines – supporting everything from HD streaming and remote work to online trading and video calls.

Martin Williams, Openreach Partnership Director, said:

“We’re bringing full fibre broadband to Swanage and letting local people know what to expect. This is a major infrastructure upgrade, so there will be more engineers and vehicles around town, but we’re working hard to keep disruption to a minimum. Wherever possible, we’ll use our existing ducts and poles, but in some cases we’ll need to install new ones to ensure every household can be included.”

The Swanage build forms part of Openreach’s wider UK rollout – which aims to connect 25 million premises to full fibre broadband by the end of 2026.

What is Openreach?

Openreach is the company that builds and maintains most of the UK’s broadband and telephone network. It’s part of the BT Group but operates independently – giving fair access to all broadband providers, including BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet and many others.

In practical terms, Openreach owns the physical network – the cables, ducts, poles and street cabinets – that connect homes and businesses to the internet. When you buy broadband from most UK providers, it’s their engineers who install and maintain the lines – even though your monthly service might come from another company.

The company’s full fibre (FTTP) network offers much faster, more reliable speeds than older copper-based systems – and its ongoing rollout is a key part of the UK government’s goal of nationwide gigabit broadband coverage.
