Broadband boost for Northampton as Openreach urges residents to upgrade
Thousands of people in Northampton could be missing out on faster, more reliable broadband, Openreach has warned.
More than 90,000 homes and businesses in the town can already upgrade to full fibre, yet fewer than 40 per cent have made the switch so far.
Openreach has invested £27 million in building its new full fibre network across Northampton – reaching around 75 per cent of local properties.
Full fibre offers a major step up in speed and reliability, allowing households to connect multiple devices at gigabit-capable speeds. The technology supports everything from streaming and gaming to remote work and online business, helping the local economy stay competitive for decades to come.
Kasam Hussain, Openreach’s Partnership Director for Northamptonshire, said:
“Fast and reliable full fibre broadband gives households and businesses a significant boost. As the UK’s leading provider of fibre infrastructure, Openreach is at the forefront of digital transformation – connecting communities all over the UK and future-proofing the network for decades to come.
“Our extensive network – the largest in the UK – means residents can shop around and find the best deals that suit their needs. But it’s important to remember that upgrades don’t happen automatically – people need to order it to take advantage of the technology.
“Openreach is committed to building the best full fibre network, and doing it sustainably is crucial for our business, the communities we serve, and the environment we all share.”
The company’s Let’s Reach Zero strategy focuses on lowering carbon emissions, cutting waste, and protecting nature wherever it operates.
Openreach’s full fibre network now reaches more than 20 million premises nationwide, with plans to extend coverage to 25 million by the end of 2026 – and potentially 30 million by the end of the decade, given the right investment conditions.
What is Openreach?
Openreach builds and maintains the UK’s largest broadband network – the infrastructure that connects homes and businesses to the internet. It owns and manages the cables, ducts and street cabinets used by many major broadband providers, including BT, Sky, Vodafone and many more.
This means that even if you’re not directly an Openreach customer, your broadband service may still run over the Openreach network. When Openreach upgrades an area to full fibre, customers can then choose from a wide range of internet providers to take advantage of the faster speeds.
