Streaming kills the video star: MTV music channels to close as viewers go online

Music television is facing another major shake-up. Paramount, the US media giant behind MTV, has confirmed plans to close several of its linear TV music channels across Europe – including the UK – by the end of this year.

According to reports from the BBC, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live will all go off air on 31 December 2025. Only the flagship MTV HD channel, which now focuses mainly on reality and entertainment shows, will remain available.

The move marks the end of an era for MTV’s traditional music channels, once a staple of pop culture for generations of TV viewers. But in 2025, audiences have largely migrated to online platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Spotify and Vevo, where they can watch or stream music videos on demand.

Industry experts say the closures are part of Paramount’s wider strategy to scale back its linear TV operations across Europe and refocus on digital streaming services. Similar shutdowns are expected in countries including Poland, Hungary, Germany, Austria and across the Benelux region, where MTV-branded and related channels like TeenNick, Comedy Central Extra and Paramount Network are also being phased out.

For UK viewers, the closures won’t mean the end of MTV content – but it does highlight a bigger shift in how we now consume music and entertainment. With faster full fibre broadband and better home Wi-Fi, fans are streaming more than ever before, switching between devices and platforms instead of tuning into scheduled TV channels.

What this means for viewers

If you grew up watching MTV, you’re not alone in feeling nostalgic – but the way we enjoy music has changed dramatically. Instead of waiting for your favourite song to come on, you can now stream high-quality music videos instantly via YouTube, Apple Music, Amazon Music or Vevo.

That means your broadband connection matters more than ever. Whether you’re streaming in HD or 4K, you’ll need a stable, high-speed connection to avoid buffering – especially if multiple devices in your home are connected at the same time.

If your music or video streaming keeps stalling, it might be time to compare broadband deals in your area and upgrade to a faster plan. Many providers now offer gigabit-capable full fibre with symmetrical upload and download speeds, making it perfect for streaming, gaming, and sharing content online.
