Is Sky broadband a good choice?

Our overall rating: 9 out of 10

Known for over 30 years as the UK’s biggest paid-TV provider, Sky now sits in the top three as a broadband service too, with around 5.8 million customers currently signed up. With an amazing range of extra bundle options to get your attention, it also comes with a higher price tag.

The positives

  • Nationwide coverage
  • Great TV options
  • Some of the fastest speeds in the UK

The negatives

  • Can be more expensive
  • Yearly price hikes
  • The new fastest speeds (2.5 and 5Gbps)less accessible

In our full review we take a look at the pros and cons of each area in more detail: speed, full fibre review, cost, setup and customer service.

How fast is Sky broadband?

Sky is now the fastest of the big broadband providers thanks to its new partnership with CityFibre. This means it can use CityFibre’s full fibre network and deliver lightening fast symmetrical speeds (download equal to upload speeds) of up to an incredible 5Gbps.

There are a wide range of speeds available across its product range. But remember, where you live will also play a factor. The two fastest 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps plans are only available to select pockets of the UK as you’ll need to be in range of CityFibre cables which are currently only accessible to around 4.5 million premises.

We’ll list everything below, but you’ll also need to check your postcode before you get too excited.

Speed is often the biggest consideration when choosing a broadband package. If you have multiple people using the internet at one time, then a higher speed and bandwidth will be essential. Equally, if it’s a small household using the internet for everyday usage, paying for business-grade bandwidth will be a waste.

You should decide what speed is right for you, based on your broadband habits at home. Here’s a handy guide to help show what bandwidth usage your different applications need.

Sky broadband packages

When you put your postcode in, the packages that come up will depend on your postcode. If you are still in an area that isn’t yet connected to Sky’s full fibre network, you’ll only see the slower first two options shown below. These are all FTTC broadband, also known as part fibre or fibre to the cabinet, they still need copper telephone lines for some of their delivery which makes the maximum speed for your home, 74Mbps.

Superfast 35

Fine for browsing and streaming in small households, this service offers average speeds of 36Mbps and uploads of around 9Mbps.

Superfast

A popular fibre broadband package with average speeds of 67Mbps and includes unlimited monthly usage. It’s the best option for anyone unable to connect to full fibre. It will take you 3 minutes, 13 seconds to download an HD movie on this broadband. And is able to handle around 8 devices simultaneously.

Sky full fibre broadband options

The following packages will be shown to anyone that can access full fibre from their postcode.

Full Fibre 75

With a 75Mbps average download speed, this plan is fine for most family homes and can easily cope with 5-8 devices being used at one time. It will take 2 minutes 37 seconds to download an HD movie.

Full Fibre 150

This 150Mbps average download speed plan is the sweet spot for households of 3-5 people and can easily cope with 5-8 devices being used at one time. It will take 1 minute 43 seconds to download an HD movie.

Full Fibre 300

An impressive plan that powers an average download speed of 300Mbps. This choice manages the demands of even the heaviest data users, whether you’re streaming constantly or running a business from home. It can manage 9-12 devices and get your movie downloaded in 39 seconds.

Full Fibre 500

This powerful plan has an average download speed of 500Mbps. These serious speeds make it possible to download an HD movie in 23 seconds and can easily handle 9-12 devices simultaneously.

Full Fibre Gigafast

Sky’s Gigabit-capable service offers users an impressive average download speed of 900Mbps which will easily cover all high-use working and gaming internet usage in busy households. It can download your movie in 13 seconds and cope with 12+ devices all being used together.

Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+

There's fast and then there's this. Will you ever need an average download – and upload – speed of 2530Mbps? Probably not. But it will cover all your needs seamlessly and it comes with the most advanced router on the market which is WiFi 7 ready. Plus, WiFi Max with extenders to make sure you have guaranteed coverage in every room is included in the price, so you're basically future-proofed and covered in every way.

Only available by CityFibre network, not Openreach

Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+

The absolute ultimate in speed. Under no circumstance will you ever need this much bandwidth at home, but if you really want the biggest and the best you'll be able to: stream 100+ 4K movies at once, download Call of Duty in about 3 minutes (this would take you 3 hours 25 minutes on a normal 100Mbps package) and upload as many game streams to Twitch as you fancy without a single jitter.

Sky full fibre review

What exactly is full fibre?

Full fibre offers the fastest available broadband – it’s possible to see speeds exceeding 1,000Mbps (1Gps).

Around 85% of homes in the UK can now access this ultrafast broadband via fibre-optic technology also known as ‘Fibre To The Premises’ (FTTP).

Full fibre removes the need to rely on copper phone lines and instead connects fibre cables straight to your home. This means there’s no slowdown on the data between the street cabinet and your property and the speed and strength are much more powerful than any previous broadband technology as a result.

This technology will future-proof homes and businesses across the UK because, once it’s installed, properties won’t need to install new cables for their broadband for decades.

Don’t have access to full fibre yet? Hopefully you will soon. The government target is to have gigabit-capable broadband available to 99% of the country by 2030.

Does Sky broadband have a reliable connection?

Sky uses the well-established Openreach and CityFibre networks to deliver all its packages. These are the physical networks (the wires under the street and the boxes on the street) and two of the biggest in the UK.

Sky has the best broadband availability in the country. And Ofcom’s 2023 report shows a Sky broadband rating review of 80% satisfaction with speed of service.

Confident of its reliability, if your Sky broadband packages (Superfast 35, Superfast, Ultrafast, Ultrafast Plus or Gigafast) fall below the speeds you were promised when you signed up for at least three days in a row in a 30-day period, you’ll get your money back.

Sky Broadband Boost

For a small extra monthly cost (£5 at the time of writing this article) you can get Sky Broadband Boost added to your package. This gives you Wi-Fi boosters, a Wi-Fi guarantee of minimum speeds in every room, a daily check run on your line and no-cost engineer visits. This is definitely worth thinking about for anyone living in remoter locations.

Our overall Sky broadband rating for connectivity: 9

How much does Sky broadband cost?

Sky certainly isn’t cheap compared to some of the other smaller providers. But price-wise it all depends on what package you choose as even though it is more expensive, the price will often factor in TV services too.

How long are Sky contracts?

Sky's broadband deals are typically 24 months as standard. There is one option for a shorter 12-month contract, the Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro, where you will pay a higher monthly price to avoid being locked in as long.

Sky is a full-service telecom provider, offering broadband, TV, landline and mobile phone contracts. The more you sign up to with them, the better your price will be.

Does Sky put up its broadband prices every year?

Yes, although Sky doesn't include specific price increase details in their broadband contracts, unlike some other providers who might have annual inflation-linked increases that you have to agree to when signing up. Because of this, when Sky does typically raise its prices – this is usually in April and as an idea of by how much, they increased it by 6.2% in 2025 – customers can leave their contract without a penalty if they aren't happy about their new monthly cost.

How easy is it to get Sky set up?

If you’re a new customer, Sky aim to get you up and running within two weeks.

Sky will handle the switching process, so you won’t even have to contact your current broadband provider to tell them you’re leaving. Sky will manage the whole transfer for you.

Will you need an engineer visit? Maybe, it depends on what connection your home currently has. For example, if you need a new full fibre installation, an engineer visit might be necessary. But Sky will be able to tell you whether this is necessary during your ordering process and book this in for you.

If this isn’t needed, your service will likely be self-installed. You’ll receive a router in the post and this will need to be connected on the activation date.

What router do you get with Sky broadband?

The router you get will depend on what Sky broadband package you are signing up to.

Sky Broadband Hub

Anyone choosing the Full Fibre 75 or Full Fibre 150 will get the very capable Sky Broadband Hub for free. These give great coverage to multiple devices and you should get speedy and reliable connection throughout your home.

This router is part of the fifth generation (so, not Wi-Fi 6) in networking standards. It operates on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands (dual-band), and features a powerful array of eight internal antennas for enhanced coverage. It also offers four gigabit-speed Ethernet ports for fast wired connections, plus smart features like automatic channel selection and the ability to self-recover from issues

Sky WiFi Max Hub

Anyone choosing the Full Fibre 300, Full Fibre 500 or Full Fibre 900 will now get the Sky WiFi Max Hub. It’s an upgraded version of the above Sky Broadband Hub. It’s a more powerful version that is a next-generation router and can support Wi-Fi 6 and handle up to 120 devices.

The Gigafast+ hub

Built with WiFi 7 technology, the Gigafast+ hub is designed for customers choosing the new 2.5 and 5 Gigafast+ packages, giving them secure speeds, lower latency and less lag for streaming, working and gaming, all at the same time.

Developed in collaboration with Comcast, and the first global WiFi device from Comcast and Sky, the tri-band Gigafast+ hub optimises internet traffic to avoid congestion between connected devices in the home. Plus, it includes two 10 Gbps ethernet ports (1 x WAN and 1 x LAN) to support a direct connection for faster speeds for heavy streamers and hefty file downloaders.

Sky Broadband customers get the speeds they’re promised or money back. Customers who choose Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ will also get WiFi Max (for no extra cost) which guarantees WiFi coverage in every room or money back.
